Oh boy, this will be something! Some new reads and one old favorite, The Shipping News. Can’t wait to find out the theme of that one—perhaps it is the joys to be found in a little pre-internet newsroom.

That is absolutely one of the pleasures of reading that novel! I can’t wait to return to it.

I am so so excited for this! I’ve been looking all over for an online way to learn how to analyse literature, this couldn’t have come at a more perfect time. Something (lots of things by the look of the dates!) to look forward to while I write my diss and begin revising for July exams, I needed this - thank you!

This is what I was hoping - to fill a bit of a gap if you're not quite sure where to start! Can't wait.

What a great list!! Great to see a mix of ones I’ve read and loved and ones that I want to get to and now have a reason to. I can’t wait for the discussion questions and following this course!

I did wonder if it was just too many but I found it hard to cut any! Really looking forward to it.

No, I think it's a perfect amount or what I would normally expect from a course anyways. It's also one of those things you just have to test out in real time to get a feel for how people are finding it overall. I just have to make sure I'm not abandoning my PhD reading too much 😂

Ah I'm so pleased to hear this Jim and looking forward to discussing some of these books with you! I also find if I haven't been reading for a while my mood dips - literature really does have a powerful effect. And it really is never too late!

I'm so excited for this Jess! English is not my first language, but English literature has been a true special interest of mine for as long as I can remember. (Also I just ordered my copy of Little, big so I'm ready to go come June! It'll be a real challenge for me I'm sure but couldn't be more excited!)

Oh I was wondering if I have a copy of : The Tartar Steppe by Dino Buzzati in Italian can I read it? Or should I read it in English?

Expand full comment
Jessie Lethaby's avatar

I would definitely read the Italian! The theme I picked for that one should still be very present (perhaps moreso which we can have a look at!) in the original.

Aren't there like three different versions in existence of Everett's Telephone? 😅 Does it matter which one we get?

Expand full comment
Jessie Lethaby's avatar

Yes there are three! I think comparing the different versions we read could be v fun (especially as we relate to the theme) so it doesn’t matter too much which one you read - the main beats are the same from what I understand. I am a Telephone obsessive so I have all three and can talk through some of the differences as well 😅 I think newer editions are all the same one unfortunately, Picador seem to have abandoned the whole idea.

I am so thrilled you are doing this! I have 'loved' reading my whole life, but have been longing for something like this without having to return to college (Uni!). The idea that we can continue to learn as we age, to better ourselves and our minds, to grow and develop as adults... this is so exciting! Thank you for taking the time to create this and for sharing your knowledge with us. Im in!
